Jordan: Rebuild is Myself, Jason Klein, Jsn Anthony, and Christian Carter. Each of us has an equal share in all of the responsibilities. Jason picked up the distro side of things and really enjoys doing it and he does it well, so we leave that to him. Otherwise, like I said, we each have an equal share in all aspects of each project. Oh and Christian is tub girl!
Jsn: I was a little skeptical at first having 4 dudes running what is currently such an upstart label. but, it's working out really well. Jason and Jordan definitely get shit done when it needs to happen and Christian is really great with those tubs! plus having the 4 of us being responsible for different things makes the others kind of accountable and when we start to gain a little more momentum the extra hands/heads/wallets will be nice.
Jason: No one can wrangle up a good tub like Christian (tub girl) Carter. Jordan is President and CEO, he keeps promising us stock options. Is $0.00 profit good?
X: What do each of you like to do with your spare time?
Jordan: If I'm not working or in class I'll most likely be doing one of the following: Playing World of Warcraft, reading, writing lyrics for my band that will one day exist, or yelling at Christian.
Christian: Usually school, riding bikes, trying to find a girlfriend, listening to Elliott Smith on repeat or being yelled at by Jordan.
Jsn: Why are you looking for a girlfriend? you have tubs to get! I tattoo for a living, so if you know anything about that you know that chances are if you're looking for me. I'll be at the shop. then I squeeze in time for my girlfriend and Red Son. my life is pretty full, sometimes I wish I could play WoW with Jordan all day, but there just isn't enough time.
Jason: May I comment on how pathetic Christian's response makes him seem? I promise he is not that "Wes Eisold-esque" despite whatever image he is trying to convey. He is a good catch and an excellent conversationalist. Any who… I work a job I hate helping every redneck in America set up there groundbreaking business venture online. Soon you will all know the joy of YTB Travel thanks in part to my services. I am however; proud to say I play bass in Run with the Hunted. It makes my life worth living.
X: How did Rebuild Records get started?
Jordan: I've always wanted to give back to this scene that has helped to shape and define my life. Jason is always reminding everybody that if you are involved in hardcore you have to be giving something back to it. Idle hands have no place in our scene. Also, I feel that there are not enough entities in our little hardcore world that do enough for the outside world. We have the ultimate weapon of change in our hands, music, but we have such poor aim. It boggles my mind that there are people in our scene who think that their actions have no impact on the lives around them, as well as their own. When I see punk/hardcore kids disrespecting woman, giving money to unjust corporations, indulging in drugs and alcohol, and consuming animals I am overwhelmed with disappointment. Most of us are guilty of one or more of these actions to some extent, and I'm not saying we should all be vegan, straight edge, anarcho-feminists (though it would be nice); but I think every single one of us can do a little more each day to take a step in a better direction. Anyways, I see Rebuild as my new weapon. I want to put out records by bands who have something to say. I want to promote positive thinking through events, free literature, shows etc. We are just another voice in the hardcore community.
Anyways, as soon as I mentioned the idea of starting a label Christian was all in. Not long after Jason joined up with us and we were working on our first release, the Can I Say/Day After Day split. Around the same time that the split was finished Jsn showed interest in what we were doing and we were more than happy to have him complete the team.
Jsn: I was definitely stoked when I saw Rebuild getting started not only because it looked like Phoenix finally had a label that was right up my alley, but that they were focused so much on the "voice" of that label and making a positive change. Once Red Son started working with Rebuild and I was involved in getting the records done, I realized how easily I took to making records. I toyed with the idea of starting my own label, but knowing my schedule I knew I wouldn't have the time to devote to keeping it going, plus there were 3 kids here doing exactly what I wanted to do with a label, so I asked them if I could be a part of it. They were stoked and that made me stoked! Stoked!
X: What bands have you guys worked with already?
Jordan: So far we have released the Can I Say/Day After Day split. The Red Son 7", and the Run with the Hunted CD/EP
X: What bands do you plan to work with in the future? Do you plan to stay on a local level or do you eventually want to deal with out-of-state bands?
Jordan: We certainly plan on working with out-of-state bands. If we stayed local we would never be able to reach many of our goals. There are so many bands out there who deserve to be heard and so many scenes that have yet to be discovered. I hope to eventually have a very diverse roster with sounds from all over. At the moment we've got lots planned out with Arizona bands outside of phoenix past and present. '08 is going to be a busy year for us!
X: Are there any ideas on what bands you'd like to have play at Rebuild Fest 2008?
Jordan: We aren't really talking about RF08 yet but I can promise a diverse line-up and some pleasant surprises. Although if you head over the azhc.net boards you are sure to find much leaked information due to a certain someone……a certain someone who takes care of the tubs.
Jason: I do believe that Christian has already promised half of Southern California a place on next year's fest.
X: Besides musical releases, what else does Rebuild offer?
Jordan: I like to think that we offer more than your average label. We will continue to push our agenda as a positive force of change. Almost any time you catch us at a show you will be sure to find lots of free literature at our table covering many topics that we consider to be very urgent issues at this point in our cultures existence. We plan to have many events in the future that focus on charities and benefits. Like I said before, hardcore/punk is a tool for change and I plan to use it to the best of my ability.
Are there any other events that Rebuild Records plans to (or has already) put on?
Jsn: Rebuild Fest '07 was an amazing success. All great bands, all good times even with the conflict of idea's being circulated. So, obviously we're working on getting the Rebuild '08 roster filled looking forward to another good time. We had asked local restaurants, artists, and clothing lines to set up tables at the fest. We're definitely going to stick to that agenda to try to bring in other aspects of our community into the scene. This is more than music and that phrase not only entails the idea's that motivate our actions it also entails the other outlets of creativity that should be supported just as much as the music and bands are supported.
X: For those who don't know, what must you go through to release an album and how long does it take?
Jsn: It's definitely easier than I thought initially. Basically you have a band. They need to record. You need a company that will produce whatever medium you're releasing ie: vinyl, cd, tape. Most of the time those companies will print the label and actually do the packaging, and of course you need someone to create the layout and you're done. With the Red Son 7" we were a little more DIY with the printing. They were hand printed covers, so we had to stuff the bags with the records and inserts.
X: How important do you think it is that people within the scene get involved as you guys have?
Jsn: If you don't get involved in one way or another I would think that you would eventually lose interest. One of the things that separates hardcore and obviously independent music as a whole is the fact the people involved are the ones that make everything happen. If people aren't involved then things aren't happening. Shows are getting put on, bands aren't being started, records aren't being put out and messages, ideas aren't being exchanged and basically you have no scene.
X: What are some ways you can suggest on getting involved besides starting a label?
Jsn: Promote shows, photography (zombiesonfilm.com), start a band, getting involved with a cause you think needs attention and tabling at shows, moshing, paying attention to what bands have to say and thinking for yourself when it comes to what they're saying. Don't just be a clone and don't be a dick. Get rowdy, get stoked, and get involved!
X: What other projects are members of Rebuild involved with, be it bands or anything else?
Jordan: Jason plays bass in Run with the Hunted and Summer Happened. Jsn sings for Red Son. Christian plays guitar in a new band called Deadair. I play Dungeons and Dragons.
Jsn: I had no idea you played dDND, I'll have to discuss this more in depth with you later.
X: Is this line of work expensive for the people doing it
Christian: Releasing records costs a decent amount of money. There have definitely been times where I'd have to put my whole paycheck into the pot for an upcoming release. The money is meaningless and the hard work that we put into our projects is nothing but rewarding when we have the finished product in our hands.
X: What kind of work do you guys do to support Rebuild financially?
Jordan: I work at Borders Books on Mill, Christian is virtually homeless, Jsn is a tattoo artist, and Jason Klein is a corporate scumbag at godaddy.com.
X: Are there any local organizations/operations you'd like to mention? Things that Rebuild supports?
Jordan: Check out Neutral Words, Green Vegetarian Restaurant, Love & Hate Tattoo, East Side Records, Zombies On Film (Vegas), The One Place, Tempe Bike Co-Op, and of course XeroX! Oh and Chopsticks Express! Jsn: Synthetic Compound, Arcane Recording Studio, Home Base Youth Services, Red Hot Robot. The Willow House Coffee Shop has moved to Van Buren and 17th Avenue. X: Thank you for your time! Any last words?
Jsn: One Love!
Jordan: Check out Vegetarianism and/or Veganism. Also, play World of Warcraft!
Jason: 60 billion animals are slaughtered every year due to an ever worsening reliance on factory farming. I consider Veganism to be a protest against this cultures complete disregard for life, and its destructive relationship with our planet. So please, do consider a vegan diet, but understand that abstaining from eating animals alone is not a solution; it is merely a tool. This culture that thrives on slavery and murder in all forms must be demolished if we expect this planet to sustain us any longer. With that said, have fun and maintain a sense of humor!
Christian: Ride bikes instead of cars and listen to Carry On!
